What is a Fraternity?
A fraternity is an association of men, selected in their college years by democratic processes, because of the adherence to common ideals and aspirations.
Out of their association arises a personal relation which makes them unselfishly seek to advance one another in the arts of life and the formal instruction of the college curriculum. They all benefit from the the culture and character which men acquire by contact with great personalities or when admitted to the partnership of great traditions
A fraternity is also of such character that after men have left college, they delight in the renewing their youth by continued association or involvement. They are motivated to bring their richest experiences back to the younger generation in part payment of the debt which they feel themselves to owe to the fraternity for which it gave them through their formative years.
Tips on Rushing
1. Experience Rush
Rush is an opportunity for you to get to know many people at UBC. UBC is quite a large campus with many students and it can be a bit overwhelming. Every fraternity has their doors open for you to go and meet quality men that will help you enjoy and enhance your university experience. Plus, it includes a lot of free food and events for the first month of the semester. Take a break before the grind of studying and enjoy a little bit of life.
2. Set up your own goals
Figure out what you want to get out of Rush. If it is people that you want to meet, you will definitely meet people. If it is a leader that you want to become, then every fraternity offers that to you. Ask yourself why you are rushing, what do you want to get out of joining a fraternity, and what can you do to help an organization be better.
3. Cross-Rush
Every fraternity has its own particular personality and you will find a few that match your own very well. However, to find out which is the best one for you, visit as many houses as you can. Meet the members of each fraternity and get a feel for who they are, what they represent, and if what they are offering is something you want to be a part of. Eventually you will find something that suits you.
4. Narrow your options
As rush progresses, it is a good idea to narrow which fraternities you are interested in joining. That way, you can spend more time at your selected houses and allow you to do a much deeper evaluation of your selected fraternities. Every fraternity has their own rush events so try to make it out to them if you can. It's fun and usually free or close to free.
5. Get to know the members of the fraternity
It is important that the members of your chosen fraternities get to know you as well. Spend time to get to know as many of them as possible. It will show that you have a vested interest in being a part of their brotherhood and organization.
6. Learn from Rush
Since you will be meeting a lot of people, do not be afraid to ask questions such as which classes are good to take, which professors to avoid or to have. Make new friends. That way, if you think that a fraternity is not for you, then at least you positively benefitted from it personally as well as having the experience of what Rush is like.
